Lejla Mgarrija marked the beginning of the village feast celebrations over the weekend at the north-western rural village of Mgarr.

This annual activity organised during the first weekend of August is characterised by exhibitions of the best local produce including fruit and vegetables, honey, olive oil and wine. Gardening, farming and fishing tools, some of which very old, also made it to the village square. Over 700 different items of local produce were said to be exhibited.

The start of Lejla Mgarrija was marked in church when the statue of the Assumption of Our Lady was brought out of its niche on Saturday, in preparation of the feast celebrated around Malta and Gozo on 15 August. In Mgarr, the same feast is not celebrated on the actual day but on the following Sunday.

Several competitions were held for flower arrangements, photography, hand made craft and local produce. A variety show pushed forward local talent while a number of known artistes performed on the main stage as well as another area specifically for folk singing. Meanwhile, those who got hungry could enjoy traditional Maltese food served at various food stalls.

This year’s special attraction was an alley decorated in fresh flowers for the occasion.

Fireworks did not lack to put l-Imgarrin into the festive spirit.

This much awaited activity draws over 2,000 visitors to the usually quiet village every year.
