UHM Presents proposals on local councils reform

Malta Independent Thursday, 21 August 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The UHM said yesterday that it has presented further proposals to social dialogue parliamentary secretary Chris Said about the local councils reform, in addition to other proposals it made.

The first proposal presented yesterday suggests a longer term for councils, which are at present elected for three years. The UHM said a longer term would enable the council majority to implement its programme and the country would not have to stop once every year for the election of a third of local councils.

The UHM also proposed amendments to the law regulating local councils in issuing tenders. They should ensure that the employees of contractors awarded contracts should have the conditions of work laid down in law and that the employees should be registered with the Employment and Training Corporation, as required by law.
