Court: 16-year-old Jailed for breaching bail conditions

Malta Independent Tuesday, 2 September 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

A 16-year-old boy from St Paul’s Bay was jailed for two months after he was found guilty of breaching bail conditions and relapsing on the night of 6 August.

The boy, whose name cannot be published since he is a minor, was conditionally discharged for three years and placed under probation on 28 February 2007 after he was found guilty of theft.

Furthermore, he was granted bail on another incident on 12 April.

In a statement, the boy told the police that he was in St Julian’s on the night of 6 August while he was supposed to be at home according to the curfew imposed by the court. At the same time, he was willingly handling stolen goods.

The court, presided over by Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera, said that the boy clearly had not learnt from his mistakes and openly challenged court decisions. Consequently, the magistrate held that he did not merit a lenient penalty and jailed him for two months and fined him €230 for breaching his probation.

Police Inspector Bernard Spiteri prosecuted.
