Nothing Excluded

Malta Independent Friday, 12 September 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 17 years ago

The Rural Affairs Ministry reacted to Mr Brincat’s statement by saying it was ironic that the MLP was accusing the government of doing nothing on climate change, and at the same time praising the committee which the government had set up to formulate a national strategy.

It was clear that the MLP’s aim was to remain uncommitted and not propose anything concrete, the ministry said.

The MLP proposal to establish controls and a monitoring system was premature and would not lead to any benefits if the MLP did not say which concrete measures should be considered to be included in the strategy. On the other hand the government was not excluding anything, including controls to ensure that the strategy was being implemented as planned.

After the expert committee concludes its consultations, a report would be drawn up which would include recommendations, and the public opinion would be sought, giving everyone the opportunity to contribute. During this consultation stage, the government wanted to hear all views, not impose its opinions, the ministry said.
