Church Commission welcomes GWU paper

Malta Independent Tuesday, 23 September 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The Pastoral Commission for the World of Work, which last February held a seminar on irregular immigration, expressed appreciation for the contribution made by the General Workers’ Union in the sector through its proposals in a policy paper.

The commission said the Church in Malta was a pioneer in its work among irregular migrants.

The commission recalled points made by the Archbishop at the seminar, who said the migrants were not a problem but real persons who represented a challenge. Mgr Pawl Cremona said we should have proper information about them, which would enable us to get over the imaginary fear of them.

The seminar had called for the setting up of an official register to organise a work system for the immigrants.
