Football – Italian Serie A: Juventus Lose at home to Palermo

Malta Independent Monday, 6 October 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Fabrizio Miccoli and Levan Mchedlidze scored yesterday to give Palermo a 2-1 win over Juventus in Serie A.

Palermo’s victory, their first against Juventus in Turin in 47 years, gives the team 12 points, one less than league leaders Lazio, Udinese and Inter.

Miccoli put Palermo ahead with his fifth goal of the year in the 24th minute and then exited the game five minutes later with an injury sustained on the play. Alessandro Del Piero pulled Juventus even in the 39th with a free kick from just outside the area that curved around the barrier.

Juventus played the entire second half a man down after Mohamed Sissoko got a second yellow in the 41st, and Palermo finally managed to take advantage of its extra man in the 81st when Mchedlidze, an 18-year-old Georgian, took a low pass from Fabio Simplicio and beat Gianluigi Buffon.

“A loss at home hits us hard,” Juventus coach Claudio Ranieri said. “We were coming off three draws and wanted the victory, but the whole game was an uphill climb. It is a tough time for us, but we have the desire and will to turn things around.”

Also, Fabio Quagliarella scored a goal in each half to give Udinese a 2-0 win over visiting Torino and a spot at the top of the standings. Torino had scored in every game this year.

Siena got a goal from Mario Frick as time expired in the first half and then held on for a 1-0 victory over Roma, which played the last 15 minutes with nine players after Philippe Mexes and Christian Panucci received their second yellow cards.

The two defenders will miss Roma’s next match against Inter.

“We played well in the first half until they scored, and in the second half we continued to try for the victory,” Roma coach Luciano Spalletti said. “We were in the game, but the two expulsions created problems.”

Alberto Gilardino scored his fourth of the year as Fiorentina defeated Chievo Verona 2-1.

Atalanta’s Sergio Floccari scored twice and teammate Cristian Doni had one goal and helped set up the other three as Atalanta defeated Sampdoria 4-2. Atalanta, which has six straight wins at home, had scored just three goals in the opening five games of the season. Antonio Cassano scored twice for Sampdoria, including one on a penalty.

Napoli lost 3-2 at Genoa, missing a chance to be alone at the top of the standings for the first time in 17 years. The loss, Napoli’s first this year in Serie A, comes three days after the squad was eliminated from the UEFA Cup by Portugal’s Benfica.

In the late match, Milan suffered at Cagliari managing only one point with a 0-0 draw.
