MCAST students made a hit in their first ever participation in a Euroskills competition held in Ahoy, Rotterdam, between 16-21 September. Six students from MCAST took part, coming back with excellent results, with Mark Philip Camilleri, Shawn Roderick Sciberras and Stephen Zahra winning silver medals in Cross Media Publishing and Electronics Workshops.

The Euroskills competition was organised at a European level as a result of the popularity of the World Skills competition held regularly every two years.

There were more than 400 competitors from 28 European countries showcasing their skills in 49 skill categories at the Euroskills Competition. The Maltese team participated in Automotive Technology Light Vehicle (Daniel Micallef), Cross Media Publishing (Mark Philip Camilleri, Darren Duncan and Luke Farrugia) and Electronics Workshop (Shawn Roderick Sciberras and Stephen Zahra). Also accompanying the team were team leader Adele Muscat and experts John Sciberras, Vince Maione, Mario Aquilina and Conrad Vassallo, all MCAST members of staff.

EuroSkills is a competition which offers organisations, such as governments, industry organisations, educational institutions and subsidy providers within the European member states, a platform for jointly improving the quality, the results and the attractiveness of vocational education and vocational skills.

The goals of the Euroskills Competition are to raise skills standards, to promote excellence in vocational skills throughout the EU, to increase awareness of the importance of skills and vocational education/training for the EU economies and societies and to encourage each EU member country to participate in Euroskills and so expand and develop the range and structure of its own vocational skills competitions.
