Malta Independent Friday, 21 November 2008, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

HSBC, through its HSBC Cares for Children Fund, will on Sunday join children and the organisations which represent them and work for their rights, to celebrate World Children’s Day.

World Children’s Day came into being on November 20, 1959 when the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. The day is observed throughout the world on different dates. In Malta, the occasion is being celebrated on 23 November with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport, the Ministry for Social Policy, the Ministry for Resources and Rural Affairs, and the entities that fall under their umbrella pooling resources to mark the day with events at Ta’ Qali National Park.

During a presentation of the sponsorship to Education Minister Dolores Cristina, the minister said: “Exercising the mind is as important as exercising the body. The activities for the day should serve as a stimulant for the children to enjoy themselves safely, and continue being active not only on the day that is dedicated to them, but throughout their life. Exercise and activity keep them healthy.”

HSBC’s head of public affairs and CSR, Josef Camilleri, said the donation by the HSBC Cares for Children Fund is part of the bank’s corporate social responsibility which goes beyond monetary funding.
