Human Rights

Malta Independent Friday, 23 January 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Am I being cynical, contemptible or whatever else you would call it? On seeing pictures of irregular migrants once more being rescued and fetched ashore in Malta, to my way of thinking they looked remarkably healthy and well dressed in spite of having been squashed together on a small wooden boat for however long, especially in the weather like Malta had over the last weeks.

If they have no thought for their own safety they should have for the people who are called out to rescue them. These people have families waiting at home for them, no doubt worried as to whether they will see them again.

These migrants have no such thoughts, having already left theirs to fend for themselves in their country. It’s alright for the European Union to say you have to pick them up and that it’s against their human rights to leave them or to send them back. What about the rescuers’ human rights?

Let’s get one thing straight. I am not a racist. I also am a migrant from UK. I love Malta. I do not demonstrate against Maltese rules or against what is happening in the country. And I don’t expect handouts from the country I have chosen to live in.

What gives these people the right to expect these things and then complain about conditions they live in? Do they expect five-star accommodation?
