Valletta Lions RFC 22

Valletta Lions has been playing for just one season steadily improving under coach Roger Davies. In their last few games, they have shown a never give up attitude and a willingness to learn from their mistakes.

Last Saturday, Qormi Sharks were up against the Valletta Lions. The conditions were perfect and the Valletta team had brought along their avid supporters who turn up every week to cheer their boys along.

Sharks won the toss, kicked off and within the first few minutes they knew they had a game on their hands as a fired up Valletta team ran at them with the ball.

The Lions were the first to score thanks to Borg making a break and running the ball around under the posts, also successfully kicking the conversion.

Sharks fought back and their captain Spagnol went over near the corner, scoring a try. The concersion was unsuccessful. Within 10 minutes of his try Qormi Sharks lost their Captain Spagnol, which added to their woes. The half time score remained the same; Valletta Lions 7, Qormi Sharks 5.

With the start of the second half Valletta were playing the better rugby, trying to move the ball around, and were rewarded with another try.

This was the play of the game, the Valletta Fly-half N. Borg took the ball around the half way chipped over the advancing Shark's backline and chased his own kick, scooped it up and ran between two defenders to score.

Sensing a win was on the cards Valletta applied pressure and scored another try from a quick recycle of the ball at a ruck and then their winger going through the blind side and scorching down the touchline to score in the corner.

The Valletta Lions roared and scored again.

The Sharks number 8 Salvu Aquilina started to run with the ball, but many a fine run fizzled out due to a lack of a support runner, but at least the Sharks were on the front foot. Their winger outpaced and out flanked his marker and ran in the corner and around under the posts. The conversion was successful.

Sharks took play to the Valletta line and won a penalty for a Valletta player going in from the side of the ruck. Their acting Captain and Hooker tapped and ran for the line with his forwards pushing him over the line so he could ground the ball.

Sharks were starting to look like a team but just when they were fired up and looking to have another go at the Valletta line, Referee Mr Bryan Corlett blew the full time whistle and that is when the celebrations began for the Valletta supporters.
