Relegation worried San Gwann beat ten-man Vittoriosa Stars to grab three valuable points and move to safer waters in the lower part of the table.

It can be considered as a deserved victory for San Gwann, even though Vittoriosa only threw in the towel when they were reduced to ten players. The sending off of Pierre Grima can be considered as the turning point of the match, as the Stars even though without start striker Eviparker, were giving a good run for their money.

For the Cottonera side it was a missed appointment, as a win would have put the Stars in second place two points behind league leaders Pieta Hotspurs.

San Gwann did the early running with Goodlip heading slightly wide and Pisani testing Camilleri who saved his grounder. On ten minutes San Gwann again dangerous with a Lee Cumbo freekick sailing over the bar.

Five minutes later Vittoriosa created the first danger when Keith Darmanin’s header slightly missed the target. On 18 minutes San Gwann took the lead when Sergio Hili’s grounder completely deceived Camilleri on the first post.

On 25 minutes Vittoriosa went close with a Keith Darmanin freekick slightly going over the bar. Two minuter Steve Pisani went close for San Gwann with his grounder going inches wide. On the half hour San Gwann goalkeeper Justin Spiteri effected the best save when he saved a Keith Darmanin well taken freekick.

On 35 minutes a Kenneth Abela corner was headed slightly wide by Darmanin.and minutes later the San Gwann goalkeeper was again called in action blocking a Justin Camilleri shot from an acute angle.

Vittoriosa were more determined in the second period but were lucky on 55 minutes when Antoine Zahra made his way inside their penalty area with his shot hitting the base of the upright and from the rebound Sergio Hili failed to score.

Vittoriosa obtained the equaliser on the hour when Robert Adami headed home a precise Larry Lagana corner from the left. Five minutes later Vittoriosa received a setback when their defender Pierre Aquilina was sent off for his second yellow.

San Gwann tried to take full advantage of this superiority and forged ahead ten minutes from time. Vittoriosa goalkeeper Alex Camilleri could only partially block a Lee Cumbo scorcher and from the rebound Steve Pisani was on hand to hammer the ball home.

Vittoriosa introduced Chukunyere in an attempt to save the match, and Kenneth Abela had two scoring opportunities but his shots went off target.
