WHO Move For Health Day: Get Malta moving - The importance of regular physical activity

Every year in the WHO European Region, over 600,000 people die as a result of lack of physical activity. Globally, 1.9 million deaths are attributed to physical inactivity. Statistics show that Malta has high rates of obesity, diabetes, cardio vascular disease, anxiety and depression. All these non-communicable diseases can be linked to lack of physical activity. Other international reports have also shown that the Maltese are the least physically active people in the EU.

It is considered that at least 60 minutes for children and 30 minutes for adults of moderate physical activity on most, preferably all days of the week reduces the risk of these serious medical conditions. The Health Promotion and Disease Prevention Department strives to promote the Health Enhancing types of Physical Activities (HEPA) which include amongst others, brisk walking, cycling, swimming, aerobics and active sports that involve an appreciable degree of physical exertion.

Background of Move for Health Day

The recommendation for an annual Move for Health Day was made by WHO in May 2002 in its resolution on diet, physical activity and health. Many WHO Member States support the initiative to have a Move for Health Day on or around 10 May of each year. Malta is one of them.

Get Malta Moving

This year, the Health Promotion Department collaborated with five local councils. The theme chosen was, ‘Get Malta Moving’. Everyone including tourists was invited to attend and participate.

The five villages that took part were: Balzan, St Paul’s Bay, Dingli, Siggiewi and Santa Lucia. Activities varied from fun runs, basketball games, aerobics sessions, cycling, brisk walking, pilates and cultural walks.

The general public was advised to:

• drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration;

• avoid the sun by wearing hats, sun glasses and light clothing;

• wear suitable running shoes; and

• carry basic first aid requirements.

Some of the councils distributed free T-shirts and refreshments to the participants in order to encourage them to take part. A particular council also gave trophies.

It is hoped that next year more local councils will consider organising HEPA initiatives on the occasion of the Move for Health Day for the ultimate benefit of our Nation.
