Court: Migrant Jailed for protest

A migrant from Guinea was jailed for 16 months after pleading guilty before Magistrate Saviour Demicoli of being involved in protests at the Safi Detention Centre on 23 March.

Some 500 migrants had started throwing stones at other persons including police officials. They also set fire to and broke several objects during the two-and-a-half-hour protest. At least five police officials had thus been injured.

Jawey Berti, 22 was also fined e4,500 to cover costs for damage at the centre. His jail term will be extended by six months if the sum is not paid.

Prosecution was led by Mario Haber and Arthur Mercieca while Dr Renzo Porsella Flores appeared for the accused.
