Crackers: Young Battery busters in action

Malta Independent Thursday, 17 September 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Several students attending SkolaSajf recently joined the environmental hero Batterina in her quest to save the earth. These students paid a visit to some of the 45 commercial establishments in various localities around Malta and Gozo where Battery Buster bins had been installed, and explained to patrons how batteries can harm the environment when disposed of incorrectly. Besides urging customers to dispose of their used batteries in an environmentally sustainable manner, they also promoted the Battery Buster Campaign, an initiative which is managed by WasteServ Malta Ltd and sponsored and supported by FIMBank plc.

To take part in the competition, all one has to do is place a minimum of five used batteries in a sealed paper or plastic bag, affix a label bearing one’s contact details, and deposit it in a Battery Buster bin found in any of the participating outlets. The more bags deposited, the greater the chance of winning one of the prizes, which include a TFT 32” Flat Screen TV, a Digital MiniDV Camcorder and a WebSurfer Netbook.

Customers who interacted with the students praised this environmental initiative. A young parent said that, “one should dispose of hazardous waste, such as batteries, responsibly, irrespective of awards or prizes”.

Like all the participating students, eight-year-old Christian was very enthusiastic. He said: “I am here because I want to contribute towards a better environment.” His older sister Erika added: “I want to make sure that every customer entering the supermarket is aware of the campaign and the competition.”

Battery Buster bins are located at Agenda Bookshops, Arkadia Foodstores (Gozo and Portomaso), Chain Supermarket, Carters Supermarket, GS Superstore, JB Stores, Peacocks, Pedigree Toyshops, Piazza Italia, Scan Computers, Scotts Supermarkets, Shoppers Discount Supermarket, Shopwise Discount Store, Smart Supermarket, things*, The Duke and Tigrija Palazz.

Further details about the Battery Buster Campaign as well as the downloadable labels to be affixed to the exterior of the bags, can be found on the website www.batterina.net
