Malta Independent Saturday, 19 September 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 16 years ago

15 local councils across Malta and Gozo joined forces in creating a consortium, aiming to implement a project related to energy saving. The total cost of this project is expected to be in the region of e200,000. Floriana, Ghajnsielem, Gharghur, Kercem, Mgarr (Malta), Mellieha, Mosta, Mtarfa, Nadur, Naxxar, Qala, Victoria, Ta’ Sannat, Xaghra and Zebbug (Gozo) make up this consortium.

Aspects involving this project include renewing energy by means of installing photovoltaic panels and solar water heaters on rooftops, with the intention of reducing electricity consumption for the improvement of the economy and the environment. These panels will be submerged internally on the Enemalta grid, and will reveal just how much CO2 will be saved during the course of the year. More information will be made available on the internet, as well as on every local council’s website.

This consortium is one of many such consortiums, whereby 41 local councils are benefiting from financial assistance from the funding scheme allocated towards energy saving. The cost of all projects involving energy saving this year amounts to around e400,000.
