Court: Man Given suspended sentence

A man was yesterday handed down a one-year suspended sentence for three years after physically assaulting and seriously injuring a man when he was drunk. He also resisted the police, slightly injured a police officer and damaged police cars. Sean Anthony Mcgahern, 34 of the UK but who resides in Gzira and Mellieha, was accused of seriously injuring Guido Farrugia early in the morning of 26 September. The incidents took place in Swieqi, Msida and Floriana among other places. Mcgahern violently resisted and attacked a police sergeant, a police constable and a doctor while on duty. He also threatened and offended them, and caused damage to a police car. He also damaged another vehicle to the detriment of police officer Daniel Zammit and caused him slight injuries. Mcgahern was also accused of breaching public peace, disobeying police orders and was drunk and disorderly in a public place. He was ordered to pay e120 in damage to the Police Commissioner and e200 to officer Daniel Zammit.

Magistrate Anthony Vella presided over the court. Police inspectors Trevor Micallef and Martin Sammut prosecuted while Dr Mark Attard appeared for the accused.
