Career Conventions Week Up and running

Malta Independent Tuesday, 3 November 2009, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Parliamentary Secretary for Revenues and Land Jason Azzopardi yesterday officially launched the sixth edition of careers conventions week at the University of Malta.

Jointly organised by KSU and AISEC (the world’s largest student organisation), Careers Convention Week takes place annually, with renowned industries from both the private sector as well as those from the public sector setting up stands at the University Quadrangle, distributing information and offering students the chance to take up the chance to get a hard start in the working environment by working for them.

Among the companies and firms on display were PricewaterhouseCoopers, Deloitte, Ernst and Young, MITA (Malta Information Technology Agency) and MISCO, with the latter recognised as the leading selection and recruitment specialist on the island.

“Thanks to these companies, students have the chance to get a glimpse of what awaits them once they finish their time at University. Special praise must be reserved towards KSU, for being pro-active when it comes to informing students on opportunities that are on hand once they graduate, and who are also acting as a medium in liaising with students liaise on their future careers and working opportunities.

“Most of these companies allow students to work for them during the summer months, hence enabling them to get first hand experience on the relation between their studies and work in their line of field. Any experience whatsoever is beneficial, and while for some it might be difficult to adjust to the working environment after concluding their studies, at least the majority would hopefully have had a head start and won’t find working full-time such a traumatic experience, as others do,” said Dr Azzopardi.

Dr Azzopardi added that in spite of the worst economic recession of the past 100 years, Malta is still an attractive proposition to investors, with opportunities within the financial sector and IT industry increasing over the past few years.
