Fire At Marsa open centre probably caused by cigarette

Malta Independent Tuesday, 8 June 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

A small fire that broke out at the Marsa open centre at about 4am yesterday is suspected to have been caused by a cigarette butt that was not properly put out, according to Ahmed Bugre, assistant manager at the open centre.

A police statement said that two Somalis were seriously injured and one slightly injured after they jumped the height of two storeys out of the window of the room that caught fire.

But Mr Bugre said one of the immigrants had sprained his ankle, while the other two were only admitted to hospital for observation.

“All three men are back at the open centre. Although the exact cause of the fire hasn’t yet been established, we believe it was an accident.”

He added that even though the building they were in is two storeys high, the window they jumped out of is actually not even a storey high.
