Financial Assistance from KMS to the Regatta association

Malta Independent Thursday, 15 July 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The traditional regatta races are events that are held twice yearly, namely on 31 March and on 8 September. These races involve typical traditional Maltese boats like frejgatini, kajjikki and dghajjes.

As of late 2009, the organising of these events was passed under the portfolio of the Parliamentary Secretariat for Youth and Sports and the Malta Sports Council (KMS-Kunsill Malti għall-iSport).

KMS, as the government entity for sport, commits itself to give assistance that is fair and reasonable to different sport organisations including the Ghaqda Regatta Nazzjonali in relation to the organising of the regatta races.

During the 31 March regatta races, seven clubs participated (B’Bugia, Cospicua, Kalkara, Marsa, Marsamxett, Senglea and Vittoriosa), competing in a total of ten (10) races in two different categories.

The prestigous Category A Shield was eventually won by Senglea while Kalkara won the Category B Shield. KMS provided prize monies and subsidies amounting to over €13,000 to the participating clubs in order to assist them in their preparations in these same races.

In addition, Ghaqda Regatta Nazzjonali Malta was presented with a cheque as financial assistance towards their contribution in the organising of the Regatta in setting up the race course.

This financial assistance was presented to Mr Sammy Busuttil, president of the Ghaqda Regatta Nazzjonali Malta by Mr Sinclair Cassar, representing KMS (photo).

Meanwhile, the KMS now looks forward to the next Regatta races which will take place on 8 September in the Valletta Grand Harbour as part of the activities commemorating the Great Siege Victory of 1565.
