Court: Another Four years in jail for fraudster Olaf Cini

Malta Independent Friday, 27 August 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Well-known fraudster Olaf Cini of Paola, who has been in jail for a number of years, was yesterday sentenced to another four years after defrauding more people out of money.

Magistrate Edwina Grima handed down the judgment yesterday after he pleaded guilty to borrowing money from a number of persons, whom he never paid back.

In July and the previous months, Cini made over €2,333 in profit to the detriment of Caroline Barthet, Mary Grace Galea, Gustav Gysler, Godfrey Formosa and Vodafone. He also pleaded guilty to making over €180 to the disadvantage of Roderick Galea.

Cini used to tell the victims he would be receiving money from abroad and paying them back immediately afterwards. The fraudster is serving a sentence, which expires in January, for defamation of a police sergeant. He is also awaiting a Court of Appeal decision. Opting not to be represented by a lawyer in court, Cini said he will be paying back the victims. Police inspector Ivan Cilia prosecuted.
