Malta Independent Thursday, 7 October 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The environmental NGO Nature Trust (Malta) welcomed the opening of the San Frangisk Animal Centre in Ta’ Qali, which will provide clinical and first aid support for injured animals, mainly domestic.

NTM also welcomed the statement by the Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs that legislation for pets’ registration will be enforced so as these are not abandoned by their owners. Strays are a result of irresponsible owners who abandon their animals. These are not only being cruel to animals but are also causing a problem to the local wild biodiversity and to society, NTM said.

It added it is currently collecting money to open the first Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, which will cost a sum in the region of €2.2 million. Air Malta is already supporting the turtle rehabilitation part of the project by aiding in the collection of funds.

Donations towards the Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre can be sent to NTM HSBC Account Turtle Project – 039069000009.
