The new biometric identity cards will be issued by August or September, said Infrastructure, Transport and Communications Minister Austin Gatt in reply to a parliamentary question, yesterday evening.

The tendering and system development will be carried out by De La Rue with which a contract will be signed in a few weeks’ time. Software and hardware development will eventually follow.

EU funding for the long due project was approved three to four weeks ago, Dr Gatt said.
