School Children in commemorative activity

Malta Independent Wednesday, 3 November 2010, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Some 500 primary school students took part in a commemorative activity marking Gozo Day at Independence Square, Victoria. Gozo Day recalls 28 October, 1798, when Archpriest Saver Cassar led Gozitans against the French forces, initiating a two-year period of provisional government led by the Gozitans themselves.

The activity included the launch of a new hymn in honour of Archpriest Cassar, with lyrics by Anton F. Attard and music composed by Mariella Spiteri.

Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said 28 October, 1798, was one of the events which helped form Gozo’s identity. Children under the direction of Angelo Bonello put up an animated representation about Archpriest Cassar and the victory over the French.
