Birkirkara Part company with Zammit and four foreigners

Malta Independent Saturday, 21 May 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Birkirkara FC have parted company with their coach Paul Zammit and his assistant Branko Nisevic.

In a statement issued by the club’s PRO, Philippe Gatt, the club stated that the committee had also decided to release four foreign players, that is, Michael Fraser, Rodolfo Kumbrevicius, Nikola Vukanac and Ibrahim Babatunde. They also decided not to renew the contract of Andrei Agius who had joined the club in January.

The club thanked all of them for their services and wished them luck for the future.

The statement fell short of naming the remaining foreign player, Argentine striker Emiliano Lattes.

But a committee spokesman said yesterday that he is not yet confirmed for the coming season, indicating that he may also be shown the door.

The same spokesman said the club’s priority was to appoint a new coach and start working from there.

He added that the Birkirkara FC committee will not be rushing into making any new signings, especially with regard to foreign players, who, in his opinion, proved to be the club’s downfall the past season.

The statement also said the committee had received letters of resignation from Joe Abela, Technical Advisor, and Joe B Grech, team manager. In their letters they expressed their deep regret over what happened in the semifinal match, when in the last substitution, the team ended playing with five foreign players. They explained that though it was a genuine mistake, they still felt responsible and that they should resign.

However, the committee did not accept their resignation.
