HSBC Malta Foundation supports sustainable development and awareness in Malta

HSBC Malta Foundation has purchased and planted more than 25,000 trees in Malta but what is perhaps more significant is the Bank’s contribution towards the promotion of the new concept of sustainability. This was stated by Mr Francis Sullivan, HSBC’s Adviser on the Environment and Deputy Head of HSBC’s Group Corporate Sustainability, during a visit to the nature park and sustainable development centre at Xrobb l-Għaġin, Delimara,

Accompanied by Minister for Resources and Rural Affairs George Pullicino, Mr Sullivan was shown around the project by Mr Vincent Attard, the President of Nature Trust (Malta). The NGO was entrusted with the management of the afforestation project while the ministry maintains responsibility for the planting and upkeep of the trees.

Over the last three years, HSBC Malta Foundation has contributed €105,000 towards this park, which is designed to rely on energy generated by renewable sources while irrigation is carried out through a biological treatment facility that treats drainage effluent water into second class water.

Mr Sullivan said: “The central idea of this initiative is to support environmental education activity towards sustainable development. Using practical examples, the centre will be contributing towards a better understanding of sustainability issues among Maltese and tourists who visit the Xrobb l-Għaġin area.”

Minister Pullicino, in thanking HSBC for its continuous support, commented, “The Xrobb l-Għaġin project will serve the purpose of illustrating the collective efforts which will contribute towards reducing emissions.  The use of renewable energy, energy efficiency in buildings, waste water treatment for reuse, and environmental education are all factors contributing towards a holistic approach in reaching our targets and having better air quality in the Maltese Islands. This park is also a direct investment in the touristic potential of the south of Malta, and in particular the Marsaxlokk area.  It complements the work which was inaugurated last week at the Marsaxlokk promenade and main square, which is making this highly popular fishing village more attractive for Maltese and tourists alike.”

The Xrobb l-Għaġin park, located at the former Deutsche Welle telecommunications centre, forms part of a national environmental plan transforming derelict areas into useable open spaces. Enriched by impressive natural beauty and enjoying breathtaking views, this project also houses a hostel that can accommodate up to 30 persons.
