KMS Summer On the Move wrap up a successful summer

Malta Independent Friday, 23 September 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

The KMS ‘Summer on the Move’ programme, sponsored by Kellogg’s, has once again proved to be a success not only for children and youngsters, registering in excess of a thousand, but also amongst adults and parents.

The 2011 programme included indoor games, adventure activities, fitness for adults, swimming, canoeing and sailing. Another course, called Sports Buzz, was jam packed with fun activities such as football, modern dance, handball, netball, educational karate, volleyball and basketball.

Sports Buzz, was devised in a conscious effort to reach out to socio-economic disadvantaged areas, where sports can be used as a catalyst to generate a positive impact on the social and economic wellbeing of the community.

While keeping in line with KMS’s philosophy of having fun while practicing sports, the basic fitness skills such as agility, balance and coordination were at the core of every programme of KMS ‘Summer on the Move’.

The Adventure Programme has once again been confirmed as an all time favourite among the upcoming youngsters aged 13 to 16 years. Besides the challenging but fun activities such as kayaking, beach games, trekking, treasure hunts and orienteering, scuba diving lessons were introduced this year.

The sessions were run by qualified coaches and trainers who encouraged each participant to develop their skills in each and every activity.

Sailing has shown a rise in the number of participants registering with the course. A total of 122 upcoming sailors took part in this year’s courses at B’Bugia Sailing Club and Vikings Sailing Club, Valletta.

Prospective sailors have been gradually introduced to sailing through the Optimist dinghy and then moved on to the RS Feva, depending on their age, weight and experience. These weekly sessions were geared for a basic hands-on introduction to sailing skills and weather interpretation knowledge, such as wind strength and direction.

Newly launched this year, the Fitness sessions at the Cottonera Complex and the swimming programme at the Tal-Qroqq Pool Complex were specifically designed with adults in mind. In total, an encouraging 82 participants enrolled for the two programmes.

For the first time, Kellogg’s, the world’s leading producer of breakfast cereals, extended its sponsorship to the KMS programme ‘Summer on the Move’, in a conscious effort to raise awareness about the benefits of a balanced diet, together with an active and healthy lifestyle.

“For the past 12 years, Kellogg’s has continued its sponsorship of the highly acclaimed SkolaSport programme and for the first time this year has extended its support to the popular Summer on the Move programme. Year after year, KMS programmes continue to attract more participants and our contributions help the Maltese young generation to achieve greater results in sports,” said a Kellogg’s spokesperson in Malta.

KMS ‘Summer on the Move’ provides children with a holistic educational programme that aims at improving their sporting abilities and exposes them to team building activities during the summer period.

Through all the sports programmes, the notion of participation and inclusion are emphasised, rather than the element of competition, giving all the children an equal chance to develop their capabilities at their own pace
