Siena Extend Roma’s misery

Malta Independent Friday, 23 September 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 14 years ago

Roma are still without a win, as Siena snatched a last-gasp draw after Pablo Daniel Osvaldo's opener yesterday.

Luis Enrique was still looking for his first victory on the Giallorossi bench, but was buoyed by a strong performance in the draw at Inter last week. He welcomed back Jose Angel from suspension and maintained Simone Perrotta at right-back, but Marco Borriello replaced Fabio Borini in attack. Bogdan Lobont stepped in for Maartek Stekelenburg, who was knocked unconscious at San Siro. Siena were also without a win, but hadn't scored yet either, but kept the faith with Franco Brienza and Emanuele Calaio'.

Roma took the lead with their first real chance after 25 minutes although Siena were the more menacing in the opening stages. Borriello battled to get the ball under control at the by-line and anticipate two defenders, flashing the pass across the six-yard box for Osvaldo to tap under the bar.

Fernando Gago and Pablo Gonzalez were introduced for the second half. Some confused Roma defending failed to clear their lines until Bolzoni drilled wide. Osvaldo stung Brkic's gloves, but Kjaer bravely got his head in the way to stop Bolzoni nodding in a corner from close range.

Siena somehow failed to score on 69 minutes, as Calaio' knocked down the ball at the by-line for Gonzalez to nod from three yards, but it was straight at a grateful Kjaer on the goalline.

The visitors eventually got their first Serie A goal of the season and a thoroughly deserved one. Brienza smacked his shot against the base of the upright, but full-back Roberto Vitiello was there to meet the rebound.

In added time, Osvaldo nearly got a winner and his second of the game, but nodded Cicinho's free kick wide of the upright.

First round of Serie A rescheduled for 21 December

The first round of Serie A games that were not played due to a player strike will be made up on 21 December.

The decision was made yesterday at an assembly of all 20 clubs.
