The Wales Grand Prix was held in Cardif recentlyf. In the veterans’ category, Joe Mifsud was representing Malta. Mifsud is presently ranked second in the world in this category. Besides the bad climate, Mifsud continued with his last season’s good performances.

In the group stage, Mifsud won all his encounters against English and Irish players 8-0, 6-0 and 7-0. In the quarter finals, he faced ex-European champion Dave Baxter, but the Maltese had the better of the Scotsman and beat him 2-0.

In the semi final, he face third world ranked, Belgian Olivier Pere where he managed a tight 1-0 win over the Belgian and he had his revenge after losing in the Mons final against the same player.

The final was of high calibre against another Belgian, Eric Threis. The Belgian went ahead and Mifsud had to run after his opponent to manage to equalise.

Two minutes from time, the Belgian took the lead but the Maltese player equalised in the last 15 seconds and forced the match into extra time. No one managed to score the winner and the game had to be decided shoot outs.

The Maltese player put up all his experience and won the competition 5-4 to win his first seasonal event to get closer to number one world rankings.
