Malta Independent Sunday, 9 October 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Sliema Wanderers, in collaboration with the Sliema Local Council, will be hosting a fitting tribute to a former retired and dedicated club man who spent more than 25 years donning the Blues jersey.

Noel Turner, right, the former Blues captain who hung up his boots at the end of the last campaign to start a coaching career with the MFA, is going to be honoured with a star fitting testimonial being played today at Tigne Ground, Sliema.

Born and bred in Sliema, Noel Turner played 344 times for the Blues and scored 50 goals. He also had a distinguished career with the national team. He also won the League on four occasions and the FA trophy three times, and was voted Player of the Year twice, the first being when Sliema famously won the league in the 1995-1996 season.

The main event (testimonial match) starts at 3pm, having a small triangular tournament of three halves of 30 minutes each.

The teams participating will be current and past Sliema teams, and also the national team players with whom Noel Turner had played. Entrance fee for the game will be €3, which will be donated to the Sliema Childrens’ crèche.

The general public is invited for this event and to also take the opportunity to visit the Midi Sliema Wanderers Sports Complex.

A reception will be held at the end of the game involving Noel Turner’s past and present presidents giving their last testimonial talks, presentation of trophies and Noel Turner’s last testimonial speech to the supporters and invited guests.

The event includes Nursery activities in the morning and a Holy Mass to be said at 12.30pm.
