Virtual Flight simulator stuns air show visitors

Malta Independent Tuesday, 11 October 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Every year The Malta International Air Show draws thousands of visitors to watch the breathtaking aerial displays and get the chance to see up close these magnificent airplanes.

This year an added attraction drew the attention of hundreds of visitors: A virtual flight simulator.

Visitors were invited to try their hand at Lock On Flaming Cliffs (2), a simulator widely regarded as one of the most realistic simulators in its class. The game mainly revolves around air-to-air combat and air-to-ground combat with some optional, unique roles such as pinpoint/anti-radiation strikes, anti-ship strikes or aerobatics.

Many people, young and old, swerved backwards and forwards on their seat as they tried to pilot various planes through the virtual skies. They were enthralled by the life-like experience they enjoyed by this amazing virtual flight simulator.

Julian Tirazona, a member of the Virtual European Air Operations (VEAO) organised the event to show that with the right hardware and software, together with motivation and dedication, real aerobatic flight teams can be recreated in a virtual world. He was assisted by other virtual flight simulator enthusiasts who shared their passion and knowledge with visitors who enjoyed a wonderful experience hitting the controls of the simulator.

AtoZ Electronics provided the equipment that included a high-end gaming PC, large PC monitor and a 42-inch LED TV, which enabled spectators to fully enjoy the breathtaking manoeuvres undertaken by those manning the simulator.

Julian ‘SkyHawk’ Tirazona, as he is known within the international virtual aerobatic and air shows community is the solo display pilot of the Eurofighter Typhoon. Every year Julian takes part in the biggest international virtual air show: The Virtual Festival of Aerobatic Teams (VFAT). This year Mr Tirazona’s team is preparing a special and unique display together with the Typhoon Solo. The festival is being held between 2 and 4 December, while arrivals will also be simulated between 25 and 27 November.
