Football - Darmanin Demajo Quashes rumours that Berti Vogts could be next Malta coach

Malta Independent Sunday, 30 October 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

MFA president Norman Darmanin Demajo yesterday quashed rumours from abroad that former Germany international defender Berti Vogts could be the next Malta coach.

The MFA last week dismissed national coach John Buttigieg and his assistant Carmel Busuttil, terminating their contract which still had two and a half years to expire.

Yesterday it was reported that Berti Vogts decided to quit his post of national coach of the Azerbaijan national team. One report – from AP – said the 65-year-old German, who has also coached Scotland, Nigeria and Kuwait, said he has "two interesting offers" to coach other national teams.

But Darmanin Demajo dismissed these rumours as “speculation and nothing more.”

He told The Malta Independent on Sunday that the MFA had not even made a mention of a substitute in the post of national coach. “There are only rumours such as this one, but I can assure you that we still have a clean sheet. What is certain is that we have to choose the right man for the right job and also for the right price,” he added.
