Powerlifting: Four Athletes back from world championships in Glasgow

Four Maltese athletes have just returned from Glasgow where they participated in the World Drug-Free Powerlifting Federation’s World Championships held at Scotstoun, Stadium.

Former world champion in the -125kg category Mario Mifsud managed a respectable second place in his category, losing only to an athlete who has claimed his 10th world title in so many years.  He also managed to set a world record Deadlift of 326kgs in his category.

Charles Degiorgio, Malta’s national -75kg category and overall champion took bronze in a 17-man strong category.  He squatted 180kgs, bench pressed 117.5kgs and deadlifted 230kgs to total 527.5kgs

Francis Spiteri, 62 years of age and competing in the Master 5 class in the 82.5kgs category, deadlifted a huge 180kgs to leave a very good impression in his first international appearance.  He added lifts of 142.5kgs in the squat and 70kgs in the bench press.

Kris Mintoff, who was competing in the equipped division for the first time abroad, squatted 235kgs, benched 150 and finished the day with a 255kg deadlift to claim bronze in the -90kg category.
