Interesting Matches at the weekend

Malta Independent Saturday, 3 December 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

The remaining four matches in round 14 promise to be very interesting, three of which involving the top six teams.

Today, in the opening match, Sliema face their old rivals Floriana while in the next match, Qormi come up against the league leaders, Valletta.

Tomorrow, Mqabba and Marsaxlokk face each other in a clash concerning the bottom end of the table. That will be followed by the Hibs-Birkirkara clash.

Valletta and Hibernians seem to have a fair chance of bagging three more points from this weekend’s encounters.

They both start firm favourites against Qormi and Birkirkara respectively, especially Hibernians.

The Paolites, in fact, apart from having top scorer Luis Edison dos Santos and Marcelo Dias back in their starting line up following suspension, will also face a depleted Birkirkara side without the suspended Fenech, Bajada and Avila Perez.

The Stripes have been disappointing their numerous fans with some slipshod displays of late and need a positive result to lift their morale.

Valletta will have all players, except the suspended Barbosa, at their coach’s disposal when facing Qormi who will have to be at their very best to stop the citizens. The Yellow Blacks will have Roderick Sammut missing through suspension.

In their last match against Balzan, the yellow blacks were shocked as they suffered two late goals to lose all the three points after they had been the best side on the field of play, especially in the first half.

Floriana and Sliema will be facing each other in the hope that either side will win the three points.

The Greens will be aiming to consolidate third place with another win. In their last four matches the Greens obtained 10 points from a maximum of 12.

The Greens are expected to include German striker Wilko Risser, signed by the Greens during the week.

To maintain this splendid run, they also have to be at their best if they are entertaining hopes of beating their old foes Sliema who have shown improvement of late, but not enough yet to see them climbing up the table.

The Blues have remained in sixth place and are now being chased by Balzan who are just two points behind.

In the remaining match, Mqabba and Marsaxlokk will be eyeing a victory as well as they try to move up the standings by earning as much points as possible.
