Malta Independent Saturday, 17 December 2011, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

ASM will be organising an event tomorrow to raise funds in aid of l-iStrina and the Malta Community Chest Fund.

It starts at 10am with the Autocross drivers competing to gain valuable points in the ASM-Poiatti National Autocross Championship. The Motocross riders will perform on vintage motorcycles dating from the 80’s. These are attracting veteran riders back to the ASM circuits. The Trials nursery bikers will perform their skills too during the day long event.

This will be the 18th consecutive annual event in aid of the Malta Community Chest Fund.

The Special ‘Car Demolition’ derby organised during the Christmas season is the highlight of the day’s event. 29 competitors are registered for this challenging feat which is scrupulously controlled by experienced officers.

The cars are modified to safety standards within written rules. Both drivers and the cars will be inspected for safety and conformity with the rules of the game throughout the race.

The winner and runner-up will be presented with trophies and champaign while still on the racetrack. ASM is pleased that about 60 cars are removed from our roads annually by means of such a competition. The Demolition is scheduled to start at 3.30pm and should last about 40 minutes.

From the ASM Autocross Championship records, Patrick Cassar, on his Opel, is leading the list with 32 points though he experienced a mechanical failure in the last event. Christian Galea, on his Ritmo, is runner-up with 27 points in Class ‘A’. Mario Scicluna is leading the Class ‘B’ Championship with five points against the 12 points won by Joseph Galea. Scicluna and Galea drive Opel cars with great abilities.

In the Motocross Class ‘A’ Carmel Borg is leading with 70 points on a Suzuki RMZ. Clayton Camilleri on a KTM and Stefan Dimech on a Honda CRF and placed second and third with 65 and 60 points respectively.

In Class ‘B’ Charles Borg is leading with 67 points and is just three points ahead of Arthur Micallef’s 63 points. Brandon Cassar and Brandon Slowe are both in third Overall with 53 points each.

The Trials Nursery is making very good progress and have already completed its 2nd Competition. There is a class for experienced riders and another for novices and beginners into Trials. Practical lessons are held avery Saturday from 3pm at the ASM premises at Ta’ Qali.

Newcomers are welcome to join the ASM Trials nursery. The Trials bikers will perform during the MCCF day of special events.

Practice sessions and car scrutineering will be held on today between 2pm and 7pm. Tomorrow’s programme starts at 10am at the ASM Racing Circuits Ta Qali.
