Xummiemu Is back

Malta Independent Friday, 27 April 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Malta’s favourite hedgehog and 90s phenomenon Xummiemu has been ‘appointed’ ambassador for the safeguarding of the environment.

Hardly a newcomer to environmental PR, Xummiemu was created two decades ago and was a household name for kids and adults alike. Many still nostalgically remember the Klabb Xummiemu and his famous birthday cards. Well, he’s back for good.

The ceremony was held at St Joseph School, where to everyone’s surprise, Xummiemu walked in the hall and claimed the throne. During the ceremony, Resources and Rural Affairs Minister George Pullicino symbolically appointed Xummiemu to the post of ambassador for the safeguarding of the environment and announced that his role will serve as the ministry’s medium for environmental issues.

Chrysander Agius, on behalf of the Hedgehog Consortium – the team which is engaged on the Xummiemu project – explained that the new look of Xummiemu was re-invented to reflect contemporary society and, as Mr Pullicino said, so will his mission.

Xummiemu is being supported by The Alfred Mizzi Foundation and the Malta International Airport.

Xummiemu is being managed by the Hedgehog Consortium which was set up to manage innovative green events and created an innovative proposal for the re-branding of Xummiemu. They have created an eventful programme hoping the Xummiemu craze will again hit the Maltese islands promoting environmental awareness served on a bed of fun.
