Party Time for Valletta

Malta Independent Saturday, 12 May 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Valletta FC will be celebrating their 21st title win in style this evening. Soon after the final league match against Hibernians, they will be presented with the Bank of Valletta Premier League Cup and that will send their thousands of fans into a frenzy.

It will give a start to a carcade from the Ta’ Qali Stadium leading to the capital, where partying is expected to continue till the early hours of tomorrow.

It has been another deserved victory for the citizens who continue dominating the local scene.

In truth, they seem to be well ahead of all their rivals and it is evident that everything points towards a more glorious future if the current situation persists.

Let us not forget that Valletta were not that impressive in most of their matches. They rarely produced any scintillating performances, but they were the most consistent side throughout the season and whenever there was some good football, they were always there.

No one doubts their qualities. Jesmond Zerafa’s squad boasts the best elements in the local field as well as some of the best foreigners that have graced our elite league this season. And the city coach had the biggest squad available.

What proved to be superior to the others, in my opinion, was their substitutes bench. Almost always, it consisted of seven top class players, thus making life easier for the coach and their other team-mates, especially when injuries or suspensions had their toll.

Zerafa, at times, must have had a big headache in trying to make his selection for the league matches.

The coach himself admitted throughout the season that the side was not at its best on many an occasion, but he was also quoted as saying that what mattered most was the result.

When one considers that they have won 25 matches, drawn five and lost just once in the 31 matches played before today’s encounter, then one must come to the conclusion that this super City side certainly deserved to win the title.

Of course, they will be eyeing another victory today to maintain their winning trend in the past matches. I am sure they will be out to avoid a slip against the Paolites, even if the latter were their main challengers for the major part of the season.
