London University Football team in first ever tour of Malta

Malta Independent Sunday, 10 June 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

The University of London football team (ULFC) will be taking part in a three-day tournament being organised by the Luxol St Andrew’s Sports Club.

They have accepted the invitation to take part from the local club president Paul Falzon.

The ULFC are looking forward to build new relationships in Malta, as well as playing, for the first time in their history, against top Maltese opposition – St Andrews FC, Qormi FC and Valletta FC, whose first team were crowned Maltese champions the part season.

The University of London Football Club (ULFC) offers high-level representative football and professional coaching to University of London students, as a squad made up of the best players from across the University of London’s constituent colleges and institutes come together to represent the largest federal university body in Europe.

The club was founded in 1836, and continued to develop and grow until the 1960’s, when the profile of the club really began to expand, as both Jimmy Hill (OBE) and Sir Bobby Robson managed the team whilst taking their coaching badges. The club played regular fixtures against other representative teams and also XI teams from Arsenal, West Ham United and QPR at their prestigious Motspur Park ground (now the training facility of Fulham FC).

Unfortunately, after over 90 years of involvement in the sport, funding cuts and the death of perennial club president Wally Goss caused the club to be disbanded in 2005. However, this absence was to be shortlived, as the club was resurrected in 2007 with the efforts of University of London Union students and new club president, Colin Hancock, a lifetime friend of Wally’s.

In recent years the newly resurgent club has again resumed their traditional fixtures on the historic British representative circuit, competing against teams like Cambridge & Oxford University, The Royal Marines FA, Royal Navy FA, Royal Army FA and United Hospitals FC.

In addition to this, the club has expanded its scope, performing the opening ceremony of the 2010 Carling Cup final between Birmingham City and Arsenal at Wembley Stadium, and in 2011 co-hosting the first ever Football Beyond Borders international football tournament in London, which saw university sides from Turkey, Finland, Egypt and Uruguay travel to London for a 10-day programme of events which not only included a high-level student football tournament, but also aimed to use football to engage with local communities, promote education, promote cross-cultural dialogue, and combat discrimination.

The programme starts on Thursday 14 June with the ULFC-Qormi FC match. ON Friday it will be Valletta who will face the visitors while on Saturday, ULFC will meet the hosts, Luxol St Andrews SC.

All matches commence at 8pm and are to be played at the St Andrews Luxol football ground.
