Malta Independent Friday, 13 July 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Kyle Vassallo, who forms part of the national Taekwondo squad, participated in the 16-21 years third European championship that was recently held in Athens, Greece.

This was a unique experience for Vassallo competing in an ‘A’ class competition. Vassallo, who was accompanied by the national coach Brian Saliba and his instructor and physical trainer Stephen Formosa, lost his first bout to Azerbaijan who proved to be more experienced.

The Malta Taekwondo Federation, once again had the honour to host Kwanjamnim (Master) Christopher Vella (6th Dan Taekwondo), photo, between 25 and 27 May where a series of technical seminars were conducted throughout the Master´s three-day visit. Dr Christopher Vella, who resides in Germany, is the Technical Director of the Malta Taekwondo Federation.

The seminars, which involved all club instructors and students, focused primarily on the technical aspects of Taekwondo. Apart from the seminars, the program also included a Poomsae (Patterns) competition and a Black Belt (Dan) grading.

Master Vella´s visit was particularly characterised by the historical introduction of Hapkimudo. Hapkimudo is a derivative of the Korean martial system of Hapkido but with some differences being orientated towards the self-defence aspect. This is incorporated in the Hosinsool (self-defence) aspect of Taekwondo.

Kwanjamnim Vella conducted sessions in Taekwondo with the aim to prepare those candidates who had their Dan grading examination.

The candidates who successfully passed their grading examination were:

Nicky Azzopardi – 2nd Dan

Luke De Marco – 1st Poom

Duncan Munro – 1st Poom

The Poomsae competition, held the day before, had the following winners:

Emvin Mifsud – Category Senior C

Rachel Mifsud – Category Pewee C

Joel Genuis – Category Junior A

Marie Claire Bonanno – Category Senior A
