Malta Independent Wednesday, 25 July 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

Infrastructure Minister Austin Gatt yesterday inaugurated St Elmo Bridge, which forms part of the regeneration project for the capital city..

The bridge, part of the breakwater built by the British over 100 years ago, was badly damaged in enemy action in World War II. Through its rebuilding, the minister said, free Malta is showing the world that it is continuing to renew itself.

The bridge is a symbol of the changes and projects implemented over the last four years in Valletta, the Grand Harbour and Marsamxett port, Dr Gatt added, listing some of the projects that have been embarked on, such as City Gate, the capital’s street paving, the Barrakka lift, the restoration being undertaken at Fort St Elmo, the restoration of the Valletta bastions, of Castille, Bieb il-Vitorja and St George Square.

Thousands of tourists visit Valletta every day, Dr Gatt said, and the government wants to give strength to the magnet that is Valletta and its monuments.
