PL Renews committed to disabled people

Malta Independent Sunday, 16 September 2012, 00:00 Last update: about 12 years ago

Disabled people, especially the deaf, need more access to information so that they can better understand what is going on around them, be able to follow discussions and news so as not to feel isolated, said Justyne Caruana, PL spokesperson for the family, children and disabled people.

Following a meeting with Għaqda Persuni Neqsin mis-Smigħ, Dr Caruana said in a statement that deaf people have difficulties trying to live a normal life. Broadcasting should be more oriented to their needs as the services provided by the state are so limited that it does not adequately address the basic needs of deaf people.

The association believes communication is lacking in sensitive fields including health, because doctors are not trained in sign language.

Meanwhile, in situations of danger, deaf people cannot contact the emergency line 112 and there is no way they can be informed about dangers to which they may be exposed, contrary to the situation in other EU countries where an alarm system for deaf people exists.

The association explained that if given the resources, it would be able to train people in sign language and carry out courses for schools and other important entities to raise awareness on the needs of deaf people.

The issue of hearing aids, assistive equipment and ear moulds, was also discussed because those provided by the Health Department are not of the highest quality and it is very expensive to go privately.

Meanwhile, inclusion in education and employment is not being practised to the full.

The PL renewed its commitment to the sector and highlighted the work carried out in internal party debates, Parliamentary Questions and in statements issued on particular subjects.

If elected, the PL promises to work for a truly inclusive society that understands the needs of people and addresses them. It believes society should be just with everyone and that everyone’s rights should be respected and guaranteed.
