During this evening’s parliamentary sitting, Labour Party deputy leader Anglu Farrugia expressed solidarity with colleague MP Franco Debono following death threats Dr Debono claimed to have received.

Dr Farrugia asked the Speaker of the House what steps were taken following the death threats. Speaker Michael Frendo replied by saying that an official letter was sent to the Commissioner of Police informing him of the death threats while requesting he takes the necessary steps and provides the necessary protection to Dr Debono.

Justice Minister Chris Said meanwhile said government appreciates the Speaker of the House took the necessary steps by sending an official letter to the Police Commissioner informing him of the death threats made against Dr Debono, adding that government condemns any threats whatsoever, let alone death threats made to a member of the House of Representatives.

Last week, Dissident Nationalist MP Franco Debono raised a breach of privilege against finance minister Tonio Fenech over comments the minister made on State TV late last month.

Minutes before the finance minister commenced his Budget speech last Wednesday, the MP revealed that he received a death threat and an empty shotgun cartridge with a note saying “If the government goes down, everybody will go down.”
