GreenPak is now the largest waste recovery scheme in Malta

Malta Independent Monday, 25 February 2013, 11:36 Last update: about 11 years ago

In recent weeks, Valletta, Cospicua and Hal Kirkop terminated their contracts with the GRTU company and transferred their waste collection and recycling services to GreenPak scheme which is a MEPA authorised scheme.

In addition from 1st March 2013 Sliema Local Council will be entrusting GreenPak with the waste management of their locality. GreenPak is now the largest waste recovery scheme in Malta, with 35 out of 68 Local Councils opting for its waste management scheme.

The separated materials collected from these localities will be sent for recycling, in a renewed push towards increasing the recovery of packaging materials in a more sustainable way. GreenPak have  always  endeavoured to instil  the awareness within the communities to recycle more  plastic, metal, glass and paper through the wide range of services it offers, from Recycling Bags kerbside collections, Bring-In sites and specific material collections such as for glass and cardboard.

The collection frequency runs throughout the week and in localities with high commercial activity, GreenPak also provides collections from shops and small businesses including Saturdays. GreenPak runs a ‘free recycling bag’ programme which is distributed to each household in an effort to encourage ‘Recycling on Tuesdays’.

Ing Mario Schembri, GreenPak Coop CEO said: “Our strategy of offering superior quality service is paying off. In the last year, we have witnessed a significant migration of Local Councils terminating their contracts with the GRTU subsidiary and entrusting GreenPak to provide their communities with better waste collection services.”

During these last 12 months six other local councils have joined the GreenPak waste recovery scheme. The localities are San Gwann, Paola, Zurrieq, Victoria (Gozo), Mdina and Gzira.

GreenPak Coop Society is a MEPA authorised scheme and is backed by PRO Europe, an umbrella organisation of 35 national producer responsibility systems engaged in the selective collection and recycling of packaging waste.
