“Pearlfect” Wedding

Malta Independent Friday, 8 March 2013, 15:39 Last update: about 11 years ago

Pearls are a staple of bridal shops and wedding catalogues. One generally finds pearls decorating wedding gowns, veils, tiaras, gloves, purses, ring-bearer pillows, and cake toppers. And at weddings, pearl jewellery has become essential for both the bride and bridesmaids.

Pearls have long befitted weddings. Since ancient times, the pearl has been a symbol of unblemished perfection. It is the oldest-known gem, and thanks to their fabulous shimmering iridescence, pearls have been prized ever since.

The tradition of giving pearls to brides probably dates back to about 1000 BC when the Hindu God, Krishna brought forth pearls from the depths of the sea to give to his daughter on her wedding day. It continued with the ancient Greeks, who believed that pearls would ensure a happy marriage. The association between pearls and weddings reached a peak during the 14th and 15th centuries when everyone from the bride to her male guests was adorned in pearls.

From Queen Elizabeth I to our modern Queen Elizabeth II, the tradition of wearing pearls on the wedding day has continued. Often today, the father of the bride or the groom gives the gift of pearls. Many brides also give their bridesmaids pearl necklaces, bracelets or earrings.

When it comes to the bride's pearl jewellery, many agree that it should be well-matched. For example, the bride’s pearl earrings should be of the same type and colour as her pearl necklace. Pearl jewellery should also be colour-coordinated with the pearls on the gown rather than with the gown itself. For instance, if the gown is ivory-coloured and the pearls on it are white, the bride's pearl jewellery should also be white. The pearls on the gown should also be the same colour as those on the veil. All in all, the pearls the bride is wearing should look like they were made to go together. However, this is naturally a matter of taste and the bride should wear whatever she feels most comfortable with.

Mikimoto pearls are considered by most experts to be the finest cultured pearls in the world. The pearls are the product of exhaustive research and experimentation by pearl expert KokichiMikimoto, and his pearls stand alone in beauty and value. Real Mikimoto pearls are relatively rare in the world of pearls. Even in photographs, it is clear that Mikimotos are of the best quality (AAA), as these pearls are exceptionally lustrous and mirror-like.

When selecting pearls, it’s best to buy them from an educated jeweller. Diamonds International does not only offer a wide selection of high-quality pearls - including Mikimoto pearls - for that one special day when you say “I do”, but their knowledgeable staff will also assist you in finding the best quality pearls within your price range.
