Tarxien Temples to be covered with a protective tent

Archaeological studies are underway as part of a project to erect a tent to protect Tarxien Temples from the elements especially rainwater. Though located in a built up area and thus not exposed as much as Mnajdra and Hagar Qim temples, the huge amount of run-off water is causing structural damages. As a result this project will address ensuring better water drainage around the temples

Parliamentary Secretary for Culture Jose Herrera said this during a visit at these temples on Sunday morning, as part of celebrations marking Heritage Malta’s tenth anniversary.

Dr Herrera said that government is committed to honour its pledge of preserving and promoting historical and cultural heritage. The parliamentary secretary toured works at the Tarxien Temples which is part of a bigger project embracing three major archaeological sites -Ggantija Temples, St Paul’s Catacombs and the aforementioned temples.

The projects are being financed through the European Regional and Development Funds, with the total sum allocated being €9.2 million.

A weather station costing €45,000 has already been installed at the Tarxien Temples, providing important data for archaeologists involved in the conservation of this temple.

Works also include three-dimensional scans of the temples which the public will have the opportunity to appreciate in a Heritage Malta exhibition to be held in the near future.

Dr Herrera said that the onus now falls on the public who must show interest and support initiatives aimed at preserving Malta’s archaeological heritage.
