Donut sellers disturb students during ‘O’ level exams

Malta Independent Monday, 22 April 2013, 12:05 Last update: about 11 years ago

It has become a habit for traders selling donuts from their vans turn up in different parts of the island – where there is traffic – in a bid to sell their products.

They have been seen in various roads, parking their vehicles on the side and opening up the back end of their van to let oncoming drivers know what they are selling.

They have now started to turn up outside venues where ‘O’ level examinations are being held.

Apart from health and traffic issues that could arise from this practice, what is of concern is that some of these donut sellers are advertising their products using loud megaphones to transmit pre-recorded messages.

This is annoying to the many parents who take their children for the exams and wait for them at the venue. The constant, repeated loud messages emanating from these megaphones is quite irritating.

What is worse however is that the noise is loud enough to be heard by the students doing their examinations. Students are complaining that their concentration is being hindered by these loud messages all throughout the exam.

Parents who have approached these donut sellers to lower the volume or, better still, switch off the system, have been told off by the traders.

Parents who contacted The Malta Independent online said that some kind of intervention from the police or education authorities would possibly help.

Contacted, Education Minister Evarist Bartolo expressed concern about the reports and promised that action will be taken.
