Baring breasts while lap dancing not a scandal – Magistrate

Malta Independent Tuesday, 21 May 2013, 10:47 Last update: about 11 years ago

A 26-year-old woman from St Paul’s Bay was acquitted of public indecency and performing immoral acts by Magistrate Ian Farrugia

The court said that it is not going to judge moral issues. No one is surprised on what happens in places such as Steam. It is not the Court to judge what is moral and immoral. The fact that a woman’s breasts were exposed does not mean that it is something scandalous, vulgar or an act of indecency.

Rebecca Camilleri was dancing in a club when the police paid a surprise visit, with a constable seeing her sitting on the lap of a foreign man, and according to him with her breasts exposed.

The court, in its verdict, said that mature people should know what a type of club “Steam” and others similar are. It is the person who chooses to go in or not.

Former Inspector Therese Sciberras testified in court that a number of police officials told her that while they did a surprise inspection in a number of clubs in Paceville, including “Steam” they saw Rebecca Camilleri on the lap of a man baring her breasts. The told her that as soon as she saw the Police she immediately put on her bra.

Police Constable Dino Farrugia said that when he entered the club he noticed a partition which was closed by a curtain. He immediately opened the curtain and as he entered what is known as the VIP area, Camilleri looked at him and arranged her bra.

Camilleri herself testified and said that she works as a lap dancer and the Police had gone in. She was wearing a bikini top and boxer shorts.  She said that her bra had loosened a bit because she had been dancing, and when she noticed what had happened she immediately put the bra back into place.

Dr. Joe Giglio defended Camilleri. Inspector Yvonne Farrugia prosecuted.
