Innovation is key at Mdina Glass

Malta Independent Monday, 27 May 2013, 10:00 Last update: about 11 years ago

When Mdina Glass first opened its doors in 1968, the company became pioneers in the production of handcrafted glassware in Malta. With these solid foundations, and a strong, continual emphasis on creativity, innovation and quality, it comes as no surprise that Mdina Glass has grown over the years to become Malta’s leading glassware producer.

As well as the flagship showroom, the Ta’ Qali headquarters also includes the workshop, where the skilled craftsmen ply their trade in creating an ever growing range of eclectic products that have become synonymous with the glassmaker of the years, ranging from bowls and vases to clocks, scenic displays, Christmas decorations, intricate figurines and much, much more. The workshop is still a popular attraction for locals and tourists alike, where visitorsgo to watch the glassblowers at work for free.

The glassmaking firm’s commitment to innovation is one of the key cornerstones of the company’s philosophy, and this is demonstrated in the growing range of Lifestyle (flower pots, pitchers, carafes, tumblers, ice-cream bowls & much more) and lighting products.

The diverse lighting range has steadily increased to include hanging barrel and pot lights, lampshades and ball lights, but this year also saw the introduction of amazing, eye catching and inspiring chandeliers. Each one, unique in it’s own right.

The first chandelier was created in 2012 as a one-off creation and became what is now known as ‘The Swirl’. This particular chandelier was inspired by previous installations Mdina Glass had created, such as a large garden water fountain. It seemed to go perfectly with the concept of a centrepiece chandelier that would become the talking point of any room or public space. Based on the response to ‘The Swirl’,the glassmakers spent a long time developing further chandelier concepts, the first of which are now available after being released earlier this year. Visitors can see the chandeliers on display at the Ta’ Qali workshop.

Mdina Glass is not new to spectacular installations. For the past two years, Valletta has played host to an amazing seven metre Christmas tree consisting of over 2,000 mouth-blown glass baubles.

Whilst these impressive installations are very prestigious and challenging, Mdina Glass’ ethos of making handmade glassware of all sizes, budgets and occasions remains central to the company’s core activities.

Mdina Glass products can be order online at www.mdinaglass.com.mt with worldwide delivery available.
