Three-way tie sees MIA among European top airports

Malta Independent Friday, 31 May 2013, 13:16 Last update: about 11 years ago

The most prestigious Euro ANNIE award saw a  three-way tie for the airports with the biggest net gain in the number of scheduled airlines operating. Düsseldorf Airport, Malta Airport and Warsaw Chopin Airport all reported a net gain of four additional airlines, between August 2012 and August 2013.

Warsaw Chopin actually welcomed six new airlines (Aegean Airlines, airberlin, Emirates, Qatar Airways, Ukraine International and Wizz Air), but lost two (Aerosvit and Brussels Airlines), for a net gain of four. Wizz Air actually left Warsaw Chopin last July to start flying from the nearby Warsaw Modlin Airport, but operational issues at the airport forced them to return in December.

But welcoming two MEB3 carriers (Emirates and Qatar Airways) in the space of 12 months, as well as two significant alliance carriers in airberlin (oneworld), and Aegean Airlines (Star Alliance), makes for a pretty impressive year.

Düsseldorf, with its smart new corporate branding, also had a net gain of four carriers. It lost Aerosvit, but gained American Airlines, Fly Georgia, HOP!, Vueling and WOW air.

Finally, Malta also had a net increase of four carriers from 23 to 27. Although it lost bmibaby, it gained airBaltic, Monarch Airlines, Transavia.com France, Turkish Airlines and Wizz Air.
