The tit-for-tat over the 100 day amnesty granted to inmates continued today, with the PN noting that the government failed to deny a litany of allegations made during a press conference held yesterday.

In a statement issued today, the PN said that minister Manuel Mallia failed to deny that a number of prisoners had their drug rehabilitation programme cut short due to the amnesty.

The statement said that this demonstrated the government’s nonchalance towards prisoners’ rehabilitation, much to the detriment of society.

It also accused the government of throwing the clock back by 20 odd years, as the last amnesty given to prisoners was back in 1996.

The statement insinuated that another reason behind the granted of the amnesty was to mitigate the overcrowding at the Corradino facility.

The statement said that “the minister failed to deny, and therefore is confirming that the Nationalist Party never gave an amnesty to prisoners following an election victory in 1992, 1998, 2003 and 2008.
