‘Government already working on amending Constitution’

Malta Independent Saturday, 22 June 2013, 17:28 Last update: about 11 years ago

Minister Helena Dalli said that the government is already working on an amendment to the Constitution to eliminate discrimination against gays, lesbians and people who changed sex.

Attending the gay pride parade this morning, the minister spoke about what has been done on LGBT rights in the government's first 100 days.  Dr Dalli said that the government will keep up the pace in order to build a society where all persons can enjoy their rights as human beings.

The minister was reacting to a private member’s bill submitted by Nationalist MP Claudette Buttigieg aimed to amend the Constitution to protest the rights of LGBTs. Dr Dalli spoke about how her ministry had spoken with the Law Commissioner so that the constitutional reform will include the prohibition of discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and on gender identity.

The minister said that when she proposed this she was worried that the Opposition would disagree, and thus she heaved a sigh of relief this week when she heard that the Nationalist Party presented a similar proposal.  Dr Dalli pointed out that we should not stop at sexual orientation but include gender identity as well.
